Clinical Outcomes Of Cosmic Dynamic Neutralization System: Preliminary Results Of 1-Year
Abstract
Aim: In this study we try to present the preliminary clinical outcomes of dynamic stabilization with the Cosmic spinal system. Material and Methods: This study includes 20 patients from Ege University School of Medicine Neurosurgery Department who underwent dynamic stabilization of lumar spine with Cosmic system.Patient participation was based on degenerative disc disease. Patients were evaluated preoperatively, postoperatively first month and then 3,6, and 12-month intervals. The 10-cm visual analog scale (VAS) was used to score both lower limb and back pain. Patient functioning was evaluated using Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and participants' general health was assessed using the Short Form questionnaire. All patients satisfaction was also reported. Twenty patients (6 women, 14 men) with a mean age 39.1 (range 33-61 years) were included. The mean pain and function scores improved significantly from baseline to one year follow-up evaluation as follows: leg pain improved from 8.2 to 3.2, back pain from 9.6 to 2.8 and ODI score from 61% to 28%. Conclusions : The early clinical outcomes of the treatment with Cosmic system are promising, with lessening of pain and disability found at follow-up review. Cosmic system may be preferable to fusion surgical treatment of degenerative disc disease becasue it decreases back and leg pain while avoding the relatively greater tissue destruction and the morbidity of donor site problems encountered in fusion. The number of the cases are small and long-term follow-up stil recommended.
