Images In Radiology: Because Sometimes Pictures Speak Louder Than Words
Abstract
A gravida 4, para 2 female came for an antenatal ultrasound to our clinic, at 35 weeks of gestation. She had a previous history of 2 still births in the past (both babies had a large, protruded tongue at birth). The present baby too was a male still born, with microcephaly and marked macroglossia.
Following image shows an antenatal ultrasound appearance of Macroglossia.
Macroglossia- Macroglossia is defined, in children and adults, as a resting tongue that protrudes beyond the teeth or alveolar ridge or mandible. Macroglossia may be associated with a number of other fetal congenital anomalies, including Beckwith-Wiedman syndrome, storage disorders, neurofibromatosis, omphalocele, nephromegaly, cystic kidneys and placentomegaly. Occasionally an anterior encephalocele or intra-oral tumor may resemble an enlarged tongue.
